The best thing you can do for your food/beverage servers is to remember that they are human beings and deserve respect.
I don’t get this whole idea that the respect you get is meant to be tied to your status in the social hierarchy, the social hierarchy which has been a completely artificial, arbitrary abstraction ever since we stopped being more than mere hunters and gatherers. I am no more impressed by the CEO of a huge company than I am the guy who sweeps the floor at night until they give me a reason to be impressed by them. And even then, it’s still ALWAYS possible to have respect and appreciation for people and different levels anyway.
So that person who brings you your food, they are important and you should treat them like they’re important because they are. It’s really this simple: don’t be a jerk.

This is such a good point. You also never know who your bartender/server really is. A good example of this, is that one of the bartenders at a bar down the street from me is also in the band Wilco (not Jeff Tweedy, obvs).
So when people belittle someone for working certain kinds of jobs, in reality you are the one that’s an asshole.

Yes! I think the people that are rude to waiter/food service/retail people have never had a service job before. I am exceedingly nice to waiters and cashiers because they get a lot of bullshit thrown in their faces daily.
