Like many other lefty, Commie musicians of their day, the Monkees were also being watched (albeit briefly) by the FBI. I have found their FBI files, which are mildly hilarious.
Ironically, the FBI referred to them on the first page as ‘The Monkeys”. Good investigative work, gentlemen.
A lot of the file is blacked out, but they were being investigated for denouncing the war in Vietnam
Here’s a fun quote:
“During the concert, subliminal messages were depicted on the screen which, in the opinion of _____ constituted “left of innovations of a political nature”. These messages as pictures were flashes of riots in Berekely, anti- U.S messages on the war in Vietnam, racial riots in Selma, Alabama and similar messages which had received unfavorable response from the audience.”
