PSYCHO JELLO

On this day in 1967, The Monkees television series surprised everyone by winning two Emmy Awards. They won for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Comedy, the award going to their main director Jim Frawley, and they beat out traditional comedy programs like Bewitched and Hogan’s Heroes to win Outstanding Comedy Series.

Not bad for a bunch of long-haired weirdos.

This video shows both Frawley and Rafelson and Schneider accepting the awards. The old dude giving the award in the second bit is Jimmy Durante, and notice what an asshole he is to Schneider, “I knew you were a writer with that beard,” “I didn’t want to let you say thanks.” It definitely shows the divide in Hollywood between the old school and the hippies, that’s for sure!
